Hormonal Surge, Interoception, Proprioception, and the Embodied Soul 1.5 to 2.5 s - Decolonial Neuroscience SfN 2025 Lat Bran Bee NIRS EEG
First-Person Consciousness
Now emotion is no longer only electrical.
Between 1.5 and 2.5 seconds, I feel my whole body respond.
Chemistry floods me: hormones circulate, interoception intensifies, proprioception reorganizes.
It is the moment when emotion becomes embodied feeling — the moment when the Soul arises.
Phenomena Involved
EEG: microstates show longer stability; the LPP begins to decline but still sustains the scene.
fNIRS: robust increase in vmPFC, insula, and ACC — evidence of interoceptive integration.
Hormones:
Adrenaline – prepares for immediate action.
Cortisol – anchors visceral response, consolidating affective memory.
Oxytocin – builds trust, bonding, and belonging.
Connectomes:
Paper (Zone 2) – amplified by oxytocin, opens fruition and metacognition.
Rock (Somatosensory, fast thinking) – strengthened by adrenaline, ensures immediate performance.
Scissors (Prefrontal, slow thinking) – shaped by cortisol, cuts and organizes experience into categories.
Soul and Spirit in the Tensional Self
Spirit (Utupe/Xapiri): the brain image not yet embodied, a semantic memory or representation without affect. It is possibility without bodily engagement.
Soul (Pei Utupe): born when emotion crosses into the body and incarnates as feeling. It is episodic, visceral, and anchored in flesh. Here, between 1.5 and 2.5 s, spirit becomes soul — no longer only thought, but lived.
The Tensional Self is the transitional space: where spirit may remain as image or transform into soul.
Voices of the Avatars
Brainlly: “Adrenaline, cortisol, oxytocin: this is the chemistry that turns image into flesh. Spirit into soul.”
Iam: “I feel. What was distant memory now pulses as feeling. Spirit finds a home in the body.”
Olmeca: “Among the Yanomami, Xapiri are spirits that visit us. But only when they touch the flesh do they become soul. The Tensional Self makes that bridge.”
Yagé: “In ritual, I sense this exact moment: the breath that comes from outside (spirit) enters the chest and becomes inside (soul).”
Math/Hep: “Connectomes now stabilize into longer blocks. Spirit, once only electrical pattern, becomes consolidated network. It is soul because it inscribes itself.”
DANA: “Each embodied emotion leaves traces in DNA, epigenetic marks. The soul is this plasticity that persists in every breath.”
Practical Example
The researcher-mother tends to her baby.
It is no longer only about recognizing the cry: it is the whole body in action.
Adrenaline quickens her heart and primes her arms.
Cortisol anchors the memory: “last time he cried like this, it was hunger.”
Oxytocin deepens the bond, the sense of belonging.
The cry, once just spirit — a brain image, a recognized sound — now becomes soul: a lived, embodied feeling, inseparable from her body.
Neuroscientific Reading
EEG – longer, more stable microstates sustaining emotional integration.
fNIRS – increased oxygenation in vmPFC, ACC, and insula, core interoceptive hubs.
Hormones – adrenaline, cortisol, oxytocin modulate physiology and connectomes.
Connectomes – Paper, Rock, and Scissors now hormonally weighted: less reversible, more stable.
Soul and Spirit – neurocultural distinction: spirit as semantic representation, soul as embodied episodic feeling.
Partial Conclusion
Between 1.5 and 2.5 s, emotion becomes feeling, spirit becomes soul.
The body breathes this transition, uniting interoception, proprioception, hormones, and connectomes in a single act.
The Tensional Self is the passage: where images may remain spirits or incarnate as soul and living memory.
