EEG (Electroencephalography)

What it is: A technique that measures brain's electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp.

Perception & Action:

EEG can capture rapid neural responses to sensory stimuli and during motor actions, offering insights into the temporal dynamics of perception and action.

Microstates:

EEG microstates are short segments of the EEG signal that reflect different patterns of brain activity. They are thought to represent brief states of stable electrical network activity in the brain.

These microstates can offer insights into different phases of cognitive processes, including perception and action.

ERP (Event-Related Potentials)

What it is: Averaged EEG data that is time-locked to the onset of a specific event or stimulus.

Perception & Action:

ERPs provide a non-invasive way to study the brain's real-time response to specific sensory, cognitive, or motor events, helping to understand the stages and timing of perceptual and action processes.

NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy)

What it is: A technique that measures changes in blood oxygenation in the brain using near-infrared light.

Perception & Action:

NIRS can monitor the brain’s oxygenation levels, offering insights into areas of the brain that are active during perceptual and motor tasks. It is less temporally precise than EEG but provides more spatial detail.

fNIRS (Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy)

What it is: An advanced form of NIRS that measures brain activity by detecting associated changes in blood oxygenation.

Perception & Action:

fNIRS is used in the study of cognitive functions, including attention, memory, and action planning. It is useful for studying perceptual and action processes as it allows for more natural movement than other imaging techniques.

These techniques help in understanding the neural processes underpinning perception, action, and cognition, which are crucial for human performance in various domains, including sports, arts, and daily activities.

Improving Performance:

Insights gained can be applied to enhance training and performance by identifying optimal brain states for learning and execution of skills.
